Sarpagandha; sarpamula সর্পগন্ধা;সর্পমূল a shrubby plant medicinal plants. It has uses in Ayurvedic medicine. The leaves of this shrub are small, long and the tips of the leaves are narrow. The flowers are green in the first stage but turn purple-black when ripe. The roots are gray in color and smell like raw tamarind. The tree blooms and bears fruit throughout the year. Charak Sanhita also mentions its medicinal use.
Sarpagandhara scientific name is raulabhalaphiya sarpentina ( Rauwolfia serpentina ). Raulwolfia is a 16th century botanist and herbalist . This species was named after him in the nineteenth century. It is called Chandrika in Sanskrit , Chhota Chand in Hindi , Dhanbarua in Urdu and so on.
